International Cartography on the History of Education (2014-2018). Statistical analysis and critical reflections from specialized scientific journals
Mapping the Discipline History of Education. Multilingual thematic panel

During the last two decades, the number of specialized scientific journals in the History of Education has multiplied, from twenty-five publishing projects, at the end of the 1990s to fifty in activity in 2018. This growth has been due to three reasons: maturation, consolidation and expansion of the History of Education as an area of knowledge; the irruption of electronic publishing in the media sphere, which considerably reduced the costs of publication and distribution; and the extension of systems of accreditation, qualification and promotion of university professors that, gradually, have generated a growing need to publish and, therefore, to put in existence means for this purpose.
This thematic panel, which is a continuation of previous works and is part of the activity of the Connecting History of Education Working Group, has the goal of contributing to the exploration of the global territory of the History of Education demarcated by the specialized scientific journals, within the framework of the Mapping the Discipline SWG of the ISCHE (http://rhe.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr/?q=mapping) Specifically, three things are intended:
- to map the scientific media space occupied by this type of publishing projects in Western Europe, the Americas and South Oceania and to deepen the existing editorial management models;
- to analyze the global production in the mentioned areas, paying special attention to some aspects directly linked to internationalization processes such as: linguistic policies and the media space occupied by each language, places of production, weight and ways of international collaboration, focus of geopolitical attention of researchers, the proportion of comparative, international, transnational or global studies, the approach and the execution of special issues or monographic sections;
- to critically discuss the technical and scientific challenges that internationalization poses to the editorial management of specialized journals.
The sample of journals under analysis is made up of the forty-five (45) published in Western Europe, the Americas and Oceania, which represent 92% of those that, in January 2019, are known to be still published in all the world. This allows to offer a relatively complete global panorama of the situation of the History of Education in the West, owing to the inclusion of different historiographical traditions – Anglo-Saxon, Latin, Ibero-American and Germanic – represented by fifteen (15) national scientific communities (Germany, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Sweden, UK, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Brazil, Canada, USA, Australia-New Zealand)
Among the works published by the journals, only articles published in the sections “monograph” – or equivalents – and “studies” – or equivalents – have been taken into consideration. The chronological range of the research goes from 2014 to 2018.
